Le Nouveau Seychelles Weekly received a stern letter from Mr. Francis Chang-Sam, attorney for Glenny Savy, this week complaining about an article which appeared in this newspaper last week entitled “President Michel urged to close down IDC”. The taxi operators are being made to pay a heavy price for not supporting the ruling party “en masse” at the last election. The foreign exchange promised by President Michel during his campaign for the presidency is coming in dribs-and-drabs, not at the promised rate of four new vehicles each month. Most taxi drivers have had to go into the parallel market for foreign exchange to pay for their new vehicles. ... read more

Last year in the run up to the presidential election, a new supermarket conveniently opened its doors in an unfinished government building selling goods usually found in a chain of supermarkets in Dubai. The owners, a Dubai based group said to be investors in a new five star hotel development, admitted they had committed stocks worth only US$ 2 million to the venture, which they estimated would last two months – that is, astride election day itself. The supermarket is still there, however, generally importing small consignments of astronomically expensive fresh fruits and vegetables, which are beyond the means of most low-income households. ... read more
