DEMOCRACY IS DEALT A BLOW ON THE HEAD
The National Assembly met on Tuesday 3rd October, last week, and amended the Broadcasting Act 1992 with the sole aim of preventing political parties from starting their own radio and/or television stations. In giving his backing to the bill President Michel has demonstrated his sensitivity to free speech and the right for the population to have access to information and points of view different from that of the ruling party. The Speaker of the National Assembly is being accused of gross dereliction of duty for not intervening during the unprovoked violent attack on the Leader of the Opposition by members of the police on Tuesday 3rd October. COURT DISMISSES CASE OF SEYCHELLOIS SEAMEN

The Supreme Court presided over by Justice Karunakaran has dismissed an action in rem against the vessel “IZARO” brought by a group of Seychellois seamen on the grounds that the action was not maintainable in law since it falls outside the scope of the Admiralty Jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. The Court also held that an admiralty action in rem against a ship may only be invoked if, the person who is liable in personam at the time the writ is issued, is the beneficial owner or charterer of the ship. ... read more

Mr Chow, who returned from the UK earlier in the week, where he was guest of the British Conservative Party at their 2006 Annual Conference, spoke exclusively to this newspaper as he was being brought up to speed by colleagues on events taking place in Seychelles during his absence. Mr Chow said that, though far away, he was kept abreast of development in Seychelles while he was in Bournemouth and used the opportunity to appraise senior figures in the British Conservative Party of the situation in Seychelles. Mr Chow was invited as leader of the sister party of the Conservatives.
