This week will make constitutional history in the Seychelles, no matter what the final outcome may be for all parties in the Opposition, the Court, The Speaker of the National Assembly and the Referee in the boxing ring and Family Tribunal. We may want to ask Judge Reilly not to leave too fast; he may have another job soon.
As we waltz over broken bottles and each side positions itself for survival, do not forget the People of Seychelles, who are going through the most difficult time in their recent history. The interest of the People can best be served through dialogue by all political parties. When you stop talking, it is only a matter of time before you stop thinking. Then we make mistakes and the People suffer.
The People of Seychelles need us to think in their interest. They need politicians to place partisan, self-serving, self-enriching motives aside. Leaders are not icons that are with us from day one to the last day the earth rotates. They come and go. But they do not all come and go the same way. Nor do they all lead the same way while they are with us.
Some use violence and intimidation as their mantle. Others use words and deeds and our belief in God to suppress our will for their own benefit. Few are democratic. Because belief and upholding of democratic values require that a Leader be confident enough to give when he can take, to be humble when he should be arrogant, and to say I am sorry when he is right. The title of Leader carries with it the heaviest burdens few are willing to bear.
Among these burdens is having to dance on broken bottles sometimes...and yes, even if you broke the bottles all by yourself.
May The Leader Restore Peace in The Ranks and let democracy flourish instead of accepting disorder in the rank and file. The People of Seychelles deserve the best possible democracy humanly available...not the worse one under the sun.
