THE once popular "Tea Tavern" at Morne Blanc, which had been closed since several years has re-opened, under new management.
Besides a cup of tea, coffee and soft drinks, the Tavern also sells beer, Guinness and snacks, and is bound to become very popular as large hotels open up at Port Glaud, Port Launay and Cap Ternay.
It used to command a fantastic view of the islands off Mahe's west coast.
However, it also overlooked a luxury house just below, built by former SMB boss Mukesh Valabhji.
It was apparently to shield Valabhji's residence from the public gaze that the Tea Tavern was abruptly closed. Its kitchen was used to cook for Valabhji's bodyguards, all SMB employees.
The closure gave Valabhji the time to erect a wall around his residence. Now that this has been done, the Tavern has been renovated, but the sea view is no longer as stunning as it used to be.
Morne Blanc residents also recall that a huge retaining wall being built behind Valabhji's house by a Chinese company, came crashing down one rainy day, the result of poor workmanship.
Luckily, the accident occurred beyond normal working hours, as there could have been tragic consequences.
