Christopher Gill's Column

Christopher GillQuestion Time on La Poudrierre

ALLOW me a moment to thank the many, many members of the Public that have written to me on various subjects which we, together, have brought to the forefront of our affairs, in a readable manner, issues facing our Nation and our People and the few sleaze balls that live off the sweat and toil of the People of Seychelles. While we do tend to have a go at SPPF and criticise their lack of initiatives, they need to start taking up these issues in a serious manner instead of sulking in depression and basking in the shame of failure, which they have resigned themselves to presently. We write to make you wake up and work SPPF. You are not supposed to sleep on a mandate.

One member of the Public, name withheld for fear of retribution of course, has written to me, which I now re-dedicate to her and all the other women in Seychelles who have been exploited and have had to compromise their dignity to survive over the last 34 years under SPPF since June 5th 1977. There are many victims; my thoughts are with them all. I have omitted the green ink of the letter as not to embarrass anyone who may have decided to cover things up lately out of false hope of one day becoming a Prime Minister in a SPPF-led coalition Government.

 Seychellois Reflect

When one deeply reflects and analyzes the current state of affairs in our Country, be it our economy, our finances, our social problems, family life, grassroots problems, politics, etc..., it is pertinent that we look at the different steps and process from a historical point to see where we are today and what is happening to Seychelles and why it has happened to us. Why are we falling apart socially and economically under SPPF? SPPF should read carefully with an open mind. I know it can be hard and it hurts. But your folklore has now been proved a false hope. Your Revolution has now enslaved the people and your Leaders have proven to be nothing more than pocket-fillers over 34 years. You need another story.

The First Blow To Seychelles Society

The first and biggest blow to our country and society which had the greatest influence on all of us till today has been the Coup d'Etat of June 5th 1977. Those men that took part in the Coup altered and changed the course of Seychelles life forever. The children that died at Katiolo from a mortar explosion died because of the Coup. The Chang-Him family, Ah-Time, Dennouse, Asher, Ali, Houreau, Mancham, Moulinie, Elizabeth, Dingwall and Monthy and so many more families all suffered grave harm to their members because the Coup of 1977 took place. However, because of the Coup, the Savy flourish beyond anyone’s dream. Where would they be today if there was no 'Zom Lib'? Working for a living I suppose, like all of us. SPPF, when Rene asks you where would you be today without 'Zom Lib', Rene is using you, cutting into the deepest unknown, because he knows, without 'Zom Lib', there would be accountability in Seychelles today. That is a shoe he and his family do not want to wear to town. But he tells us all to wear it.

A Band of Thieves Not a Band of Brothers

Those guilty Coup participants were a band of thieves, out to get whatever they could from a peaceful non-violent people, some participants were fooled into believing that it was all for a good cause. They looted the National Emblems and National symbols and the status of Nationhood. It is the Coup and the thinking behind it that has awoken the violence in us Seychellois as a people. Today, young Seychellois men go to the beach and town sporting daggers under their shirts. The "Coup Clique", a small group of men, set out to destroy Freedom, Peace Prosperity, a Free Market, and the aspirations of a People yearning to open up to the World. Instead, they made our World a world wherein Terror and Intimidation reign. Disappearances were part of the normal conduct of civic affairs for government and Human Rights abuses were a tool to be used to crush the will of the Seychellois. These men were a band of thieves, not a band of brothers! Since then, many of them have fallen in dispute and played the blame game on each other. Many of them have feasted off acquired properties given to them from Rene for a pittance and a cent. They drive in nice cars with tinted windows to hide their criminal intents. They hope their children can shake off their legacy. Today, they attempt to intimidate voices of Freedom to deny Seychellois a voice because they have nothing to say and nothing to defend.

Make Your People Enemies Teach them to Live on Their Knees

When our fellow Seychellois were strong and resisted Rene's nightmare, they were detained, jailed without charge and then sent off into exile. Once gone, their properties were acquired by the same Dictator. Rene would arrogantly even suggest if Seychellois did not like the system he was imposing on them, they could leave Seychelles. Many did. But it was not a choice. As many as 15,000 Seychellois left Seychelles. When I travel overseas, I cannot tell you how many Seychellois I have met in my life that cries heavy tears when I mention: "Seychelles". We must not forget them. Many have been traumatized by Rene and his dictatorial antics. Many are perplexed at the thought of being called an "Enemy of The State" in the land which they were born and love.

The One Party State Dictatorship was hell bent on maintaining a powerful military presence to intimidate simple Seychellois into knee-bent submission. (Read on Momma, soak it in!) Rene created armed State Terror Squads, and other State Para Military Units and apparatus to "defend the Revolution a la Fidel Castro Cuban-tyle. We all remember the Militia, where our mothers and fathers and uncles and aunties would work every night on every corner of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue to defend the Revolution with Chinese made AK- 47 in hand. Terror Squads still exist in Seychelles. If they do not exist, say so SPPF, on SBC. If those that practice Terror are operating beyond the color of law and authority, then arrest them SPPF. Show them you are a peace-loving party and not a party that adores violence and the flow of Seychellois blood on our streets.

 Tin-Pot Can of Beans Failure

What a Revolution it has turned out to be? Fancy motor yachts bigger than Khassogi's dock at Eden Island today. Everyone except Seychellois is allowed to have foreign exchange. SIBA sells everything available in the World, but not to Seychellois. The Revolution has rendered the Rupee worthless, but SPPF still tell us it is strong. PUC does not want it anymore. SEPEC is starting to abandon it. It charges 4 Cocos ferry and others fuel fees in foreign exchange, but Qatar Airways pays Rupees for fuel bills. It appears, apparently, that our Dictator who promised to be so smart has turned out to be a tin-pot can of beans.

Evil destroys Evil so sit tight everyone, as maintaining the supply of rice becomes a major challenge for the tin of beans. When oil prices hit $120.00 a barrel next week, I hate to say it, "but I told you so again!" Now evacuate your prawns from Coetivy since they are DOOMED, in your BOOM as the implosion of failure sets in for all of us!

Let Us Not Forget Icons of Failure

We must not forget about the Young Pioneers, The Youth League and NYS, all ICONS of Rene's failures which he gifted to us when we faced a barrel of a gun down our throats or other sensitive bodily parts. These communist structures of state were introduced by Rene himself and along with his side kick James Michel, who is now the President of Seychelles. It is these communist structures of state that were the embryo's of what was to become our social failures today in "2000 and Beyond" under SPPF. Make no mistake about this assertion. Today, Seychelles is short of one generation. Hence, the constant need to import labor. If this is not true SPPF advise us otherwise. Meanwhile 25 lawyers are packing it up and making it for Canada, Australia, UK and perhaps even Zimbabwe after Mugabe leaves. We do not have to count the number of Doctors, Nurses, and Accountants that have left Seychelles. SPPF because they are ashamed (Kanmmi), say "we have to think Globally". Right!

Communist Structures Fail Us

While Momma was out on Militia duty, baby sister was at home getting pregnant under age. Papa was out making babies with neighbor, Mommas best friend, and brother was out smoking, sniffing and peddling drugs since it made more sense to him than to walk up and down a beach all night carrying an AK- 47 and all you would ever see was a bunch of ghost crabs in the sand. Socially, communicable diseases spread as did AIDS under SPPF. Because SPPF was irresponsible in handling our Nationhood, it was all down hill thereafter. (Read on Charlie Oh, how the Truth hurts!)

Today, as a stop gap, Ministry of Health hands out condoms to fight AIDS, without trying to alter the behavior and instilling some moral values in people's perception of what is right and what is wrong. What has SPPF done to the role of the Church in our lives?

Now we find TRUST Condoms on all our beaches, "Anba Sed", behind school rooms, behind alleys and car parks, behind offices. Trust condoms and packets are even more prolific than take away boxes as a source of pollution in Seychelles, today. Our men and women are now so open and free over sex that it endangers their lives. The reigns of morality have been severed. Hence, the high rate of family disintegration, break downs, infidelity, loss of faith and destruction of the moral fabric of our society. In all this it is our women that suffer the most. Men just pack up and leave.

Failure Feeds on Victims

The seeds of failure were sowed early. Who sent our young girls to become Young Pioneers? Who sent them out to Outer Islands to collect birds' eggs and meet them there and make them become sexual pleasures and victims of sex abuse all the time while they were underage?

Who brought Tanzanian troops to Seychelles, Malagasy troops, North Koreans troops, only to allow them to use our women and leave them with child - only to leave them as single parents to fend for themselves for a generation.

These mothers have had to join social welfare lines to live. They have had no choice but to become wards of SPPF, since there was no other structure or safety net to fall back on. Today, a new generation of women actively prostitutes themselves on the main streets of Victoria, SPPF say very little about it, and allow it to continue.

What has SPPF done to protect these women who are at the end of the day victims of SPPF social decay? It's not nice to blame, but if the shoe fits, start wearing it, and start walking. Help our women.

Today as SPPF reports news of rape and violence against women, what about those cases during the Youth League and Young Pioneers and NYS cases? Has SPPF forgotten about those cases? Would it like a reminder of those cases? Maybe a registry can be formed to document all these cases of abuse under the One Party State . I am sure the UN through UNDP office in Seychelles would add it to our Human Development Index one way or another.

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!
