Mr. Editor
While I appreciate the coverage your newspaper has given about the Plantation Club and our battle to save our hotel from what we feel is unjustified action, I must register my protest with you that I feel it was very wrong for you to include the picture of President Michel on the front page of your February 29th Issue.
While we have made statements about certain individuals within the government who have taken action against us, we feel that there is no evidence whatsoever of the involvement of the President. By including his picture next to Mr. Francis Chang- Leng’s, it can be seen that you are implying that he is involved in this matter. Nothing you have said in your article gives any evidence, whatsoever, that the President is in any way involved.
In my personal opinion, the effect of your newspaper, in bringing matters of importance to the attention of the public, will be greatly strengthened if you confined the direction of your editorials to matters that can be backed up by firm evidence.

While we sympathize with the demise of Mr. Davison and the Plantation Club Hotel, we did not insinuate nor was it our intention to imply, that President Michel is somehow linked to the closure of the Plantation Club Hotel. The photographs of President Michel together with Mr. Francis Cheng-Leng were simply to show that Cheng-Leng is believed to be President Michel’s right hand man. Since we mentioned that Cheng-Leng may have paid a visit to India to discuss the hotel issue with the banks there, we attempted to question whether President Michel had sanctioned the visit and in what capacity was Cheng-Leng meeting with officials of the banks. We also questioned the propriety of such a visit and called upon President Michel to make a public statement on the issue as Head of Government.

Editor,
The call for a commission in Seychelles - A Truth and Reconciliation Commission, is indeed needed. That the call was made by a leader of opposition recently is as well not unexpected even though that this time the call was made by Hon. Wavel Ramkalawan who is as well leader of SNP.
As far as I can recall SNP was a party who from day one derided and ridiculed the same call made many years ago by then leader of opposition, James Mancham, then as well leader of the then main opposition party DP, almost echoing the reaction of the previous administration in its own derision, and that attempt never gained momentum. At that time it was not politically expedient for the SNP to support such a move by the DP Leader for it would have surely removed the storm winds of ‘saboule’ from their sails had the attempt by Mancham been successful.
Now that the roles have reversed, we see the SNP Leader almost imitating Mancham in everything that Mancham did then, today. However in true form and fashion, all ideas generated by Mr. Ramakalawan are his ideas and since they are his ideas, are by default, great and good!
Yes Seychelles needs a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and I would hope that President Michel would find the personal and political COURAGE to approach the idea this time floated by Hon. Ramkalawan, and take it up.
The President in the past as well has mentioned ‘reykonsiliasyon’ and its importance. How to do this in a practical manner without causing more harm to Seychelles is another question?
On another point and interesting for me to note that now the SNP in a ‘Regar’ article is calling for the Rupee to be made stronger! Wonderful. Back then the approach was to link their reforms to’devaluation’ as a way to save Seychelles, unless I am mistaken. When a move is done today with the results which it is producing, the SNP now find it politically expedient once again to call for our Rupee change, this time and as mentioned, to be made stronger!
Yes Seychellesneeds sustainable practical development so that it manages to stay above global economic tides. For this to happen Seychelles will need to find its ‘perfect niche’ requiring support and ideas from all. Playing politics with our lives no matter from which quarter is not and never will be practical nor beneficial for the people.
On the ‘Rekonsiliasyon’ proposal of Mr. Ramkalawan, perhaps there has been and continues to be contact between the SNP Leader and former President Mancham on this latest attempt, who by the way still champions ‘National Reconciliation’ and ‘Seychelles First’.
Thank You
Jess
