SEYCHELLES is a strange land where, according to former presidential candidate Mr. Philip Boule, “long ago Seychellois aspired to be Chief Justice, nowadays the Chief Justice aspires to be Seychellois”, not the other way round where a Seychellois is appointed Chief Justice, this the ruling elite finds it difficult to stomach for fear of losing control over the judiciary. This situation has replicated itself throughout the local system in government.
It is believed that a very high profile taxman has also been made a Seychellois. Apparently he does not take too kindly when people call him a Seychellois. His response is that he is living and working in Seychelles; he is very coy about his newly-acquired status, almost ashamed one would conclude from his reaction when confronted with this reality.
How much does a taxman earn in this country is what most people who frequently attend the International Casino in Victoria wants to know. Is he there at the pleasure of the President checking on business people so that a fair assessment of their income can be made or is he there for his own little enjoyment to part with all these rupees rolling in from the streets of Victoria????
