FOR many countries with limited natural resources, tourism is their emerging strength as the mainstay of the economy. Tourism as the major national industry is growing rapidly and this development contributes positively to poverty reduction.
Tourism has become the dominant industry by giving strength to other sectors for development. Many sectors of the economy are now more dependant on tourism. Foreign exchange earnings from tourism help many countries to settle their external debts and to import products that are not locally available.
The income from tourism also helps to draw a national strategic socio-economic development plan and undertakes a transformation to better the lives of people living in remote communities.
The creation of employment whether directly or indirectly is a major factor that reduces economic burden. Many countries focus on national expansions and financial resources are dedicated to the constructions of roads, utilities such as water and electricity facilities, telecommunication network, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, souvenir outlets and other reliable community facilities. These investments enhance economic development.
Countries which are genuinely interested in high quality tourism set up tourism schools, tourism training centres and other related educational institutions for the formation of qualified personnel. Being serious about getting the best professionals for tourism industry is a commitment to ensure that there is no shortage of local expertise. This also fosters national and international investments when skilled manpower is easily available.
Agricultural land and the fishing industry which have remained dormant and unexploited over the years have become an urgent need for development to cope with the high demand of food production.
A boom in tourism can help exploit these two important resources. This leads to the creation of unskilled jobs which can benefit those with limited education and the less fortunate.
Multi-cultural values and educational exchanges have an impact on societies and this may influence life styles. Tourism promotes economic and political stability and social harmony.
Countries with sound and transparent economic policies, good governance and tolerant to other cultures have international support for investments and economic growth. Within this framework a spirit of national unity is required in fighting poverty.
