COVETED POLITICAL PARTY OR N.G.O.?
AFTER the Young Leaders, set up by President Michel soon after his election in September 2006, we have the Jj Spirit Foundation calling on the youths to join.
These days, SBC TV regularly advertises Jj Spirit Foundation in prime time. Youths are told they will participate in a host of activities and a bright future upon membership. They can join by filling in a form obtained by downloading the Jj Spirit Foundation website or calling personally at a newly-opened office in Victoria.
The Jj Spirit Foundation is said to be a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), an otherwise non-political body. But it is virtually impossible to find anything more political. Many believe that Michel is preparing himself to run as an independent candidate should he fail to get the endorsement of his party.
JJ stands for James Michel and Joe Belmont, who were presented as the SPPF presidential and vice-presidential candidates in 2006. Then came into being the Jj Spirit linked to most partisan activities initiated by the SPPF.
Youths from 12 onwards can join the Jj Spirit, though the adverts claim that those aged between 12 and 17 need parental approvals.
Many Seychellois are now questioning the raison d'etre of such an organisation. There does not seem to be any tangible reason for it.
Therefore, speculation is rife as to whys of its creation. Some people believe that it is a way of coercing young Seychellois to adhere to the SPPF at an early age. Youths will be led to believe that unless one is a member of the Jj Spirit Foundation, it will be difficult to get on in life. Membership, on the other hand, will open all kinds of doors and they will be assured a bright future.
Some people believe that in due course, the SPPF can even afford to abolish the notorious " security clearance", as someone's political shade will be assessed easily depending on whether he or she is a member of the Jj Spirit Foundation.
There is also speculation that the organisation has been set up to ensure Michel's political survival. There is a possibility that he could be dropped as presidential candidate in 2011. In that eventuality, he wants most of the cards stacked his way.
It is believed that many young firebrands, including some MNAs are willing to go all the way for him and resent the old guard, as epitomised by ex-President Rene and Sylvette Pool.
