ANOTHER YEAR OF EXCELLENT IGCSE RESULTS FOR THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

The Independent School has once again managed to excel in the International Certificate of Education (ICE) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) of the University of Cambridge International Examinations.

Cambridge IGCSE is used by schools in over 100 countries worldwide and is internationally recognised as being equivalent to the UK IGCSE.

At the Independent School there are three compulsory IGCSE subjects: English as a Second Language and French (which they sit in S4) and Mathematics.  Currently there are on offer nine other optional subjects: English as a First Language, English Literature, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art and Design, and Computer Studies.  It is to be noted that due to timetable constraints some combinations are not available.

41 of the 45 students who completed their secondary schooling at the Independent School in December 2007, qualified for ICE; 17 scored Distinction, 22 Merit, and 2 Pass.  To qualify for ICE, a student must pass seven or more IGCSE subjects from five different subject groups as follows:

At least two from Group I – Languages, and at least one from each of the remaining groups: Group II – Humanities and Social Sciences, Group III – Sciences, Group IV – Mathematics, Group V – Creative, Technical and Vocational.

The minimum number of subject entries per student was eight but most students sat for more than eight subjects. There were 427 subject entries. A record number of 20 students obtained at least five A*/A grades, and 41 out of the 45 students, i.e. 91%, obtained at least 5 credits.  Another point to note is that, in addition to our students’ excellent performance in Languages, this year they have excelled equally well in the Sciences and Mathematics. Four Students scored A*’s or A’s in all their ten subjects.  They are Tyrian Zarqani-Gendron (10 A*’s) , Annabel Marie (8 A*’s and 2 A’s), Tania Furneau (6 A*’s and 4 A’s) and Edith Wong (3 A*’s and 7 A’s).  Another eight students obtained either eight or nine A*/A grades. As can be seen from the table below almost 50% of the grades were A* or A grades and there were no failures. +Number and percentage of grades for all subjects combined are given in the table below:

Most of these students worked their way up from kindergarten through to S5 and did not go through any selection process.  Therefore the results demonstrate once again the high academic standards of the school and reflect the dedication and hard work of the teachers, the seriousness and motivation of the students and the support and encouragement of their parents.

Congratulations to all students on their excellent performance, and best wishes to them in their future endeavours.
