MORE SAFETY ON THE ROAD PLEASE!

SPTC buses having difficulty rounding the bend at the spot where the mirror is broken

THE SPPF has failed to provide the most basic of services. Therefore it would be naïve of us, to the point of absurdity, to expect them to deliver on the more complicated issues facing this country today. A typical example of that is for almost two months now, the mirror in the sharp bend going down to Beau Vallon just after the bus stop at the entrance to Pascal Village has been broken. For people not traveling to or from Beau Vallon on a daily basis it may not be a cause for concern, but for others especially those traveling by public transport, SPTC buses, it is a daily nightmare.

The mirror was put up because it was deemed important that motorists going round this bend see the oncoming traffic especially since there is another sharp bend just after that part of the road. This road is used by the long SPTC buses, as depicted in our photograph taken at the very same spot, for commuters going to and from Beau Vallon, Glacis and Bel Ombre. For a while now every day, the poor drivers have to make some dangerous maneuvre whenever two of the buses are going round the bend in opposite direction at the same time.

It is not only stressful for the drivers but for passengers on board as well as one keep hoping and praying that one will reach one's destination safely. So could the respective authority fix this situation by replacing the broken mirror because as it is, it's an accident waiting to happen.

Another point of concern is the wall close to the Chaka family at St. Louis next to the Chinese Embassy. Two portions of the wall came down during the last spell of heavy rain. Work on both parts started during the rainy season and has since stopped. It is difficult to understand why this wall has not been completed now that we are having sunny weather or are we waiting for the heavy rains before it is done.

Now with the schools on holiday and less children using this stretch of road it will be the right time to finish it once and for all so that we do not have the same mess and complication as we did before - if we get another spell of heavy rain. “Pou lamour Sesel”.
