HOW FAR WILL THEY GO?

The wonderful magical days when our President France Albert Rene (FAR) at the time, would face a crisis, he would go on SBC and give a speech and chase the problem away, is over. He would yell at Moosa, and onions would be on the shelf the next day. Although Moosa had nothing to do with the lack of availability of onions, Moosa was Rene’s scapegoat - blame them for everything. Rene would insult the business community, frightening and blaming them for nearly all that was not well with his socialist philosophy “a la Creole”.

This provided him with the required excuse to establish his beloved SMB and in stepped Mukesh. SMB would do the job and worry about settlement of the bill later or never. Today, SMB is replaced by STB, but the tactics are the same. Be prepared! How can we forget about the clever argument of a "pti group dimoun pe fer komplo pou sabotaz lekonomi nou pei".

When there was not enough foreign exchange to re-order goods imported and consumed, they created a "Pipeline" and the business community, even though they despised Rene’s leadership, would follow his order and line up their money in the "Pipeline", where it stayed for well over a decade only to be returned for less real value than when it was so placed. They wanted to believe in this charade in the hope of saving themselves from the destruction at hand which was being created. Funny how complicated a little country can get.

Where Is The Magical Piper

Rene was like a magical piper; whenever there was a problem, he would pipe away and bring about a miracle, even though it would eventually lead to a disaster. It did not matter, at the moment, he solved problems and the Country just kept on moving. For many SPPF, that is the key reason they support SPPF; Rene keeps them going. His bags of tricks are amazing to the real world. They were amazed at how he could just indebt a country to the point where it could financially sink and burden future generation for years to come. All along, Rene would say there is no other way. Today, we are Islanders with the debts of Wall Street financial houses.

When Michel took over he was coxed into assuming more debt instead of taking steps along the way to keep our Rupee convertible to retain our dignity in the World.

Remember, Rene is not gone. He is still around. He is maybe older now and the body maybe weaker, but his mind is as sharp as a razor blade. His tenacity is still aggressive.

When there was not enough foreign exchange to go around to meet national needs, he would go on SBC wearing one of those one party state polyester shirts, and say, “the hard currency you earn belongs to the People of Seychelles". Sounds nice, but violates every law of human nature and jumps hurdles of what is considered civil in a society.

If It’s Not Yours Steal It!

When the SPPF came to power through a Coup d'Etat, Rene wasted no time to nationalize real estate properties that were being held by the most productive sectors of our Country. While a lot of land was held in useless tracks, Rene did not encourage anyone to develop any properties. He turned over the rules of productivity instead. The SPPF masterminded a dreadful social experiment which disenfranchised the Church, thousands of Seychellois and turned our country inside out and upside down. When in dire straits, they turned the Country on its head. This led to rightful resistance and heightened political divisions in Seychelles. As they stood behind ZOM LIB, an artificial facade to justifying a coup of a Government they were already a part of as Prime Minister and Ministers, the Opposition to Rene went overseas and underground.

Tourism numbers never soared. Even the numbers today of 148000 arrivals per year are shameful for Seychelles. The West looked at Seychelles as a political pariah in the region.

Why Write About The Past?

Because Rene still calls the shots. With that we must remember he will turn things up side down again when faced with a crisis. The well-healed of the civilized World do not trust tyranny. Hence, why sales of villas and artificial islands are difficult to get off the ground. When that fails, Rene will react. When he reacts, be prepared for the worse. He will set up road blocks, seize your foreign exchange. SPPF will increase the incidences of taxes beyond what is normal in a democratic society. The more they tax, the less business will move, things will get worse. As they get worse, they will seize more hard currency deposited in bank accounts onshore and offshore, but in Central Bank of Seychelles accounts. Depositors will loose all their hard-earned money. We will not be able to buy fuel and sustain our economy. Outer islands will become useless and too costly to develop and access. They will not make any business sense.

Diesel stored over here destined for Comoros will be siphoned off to give PUC access to fuel to keep its generators going. They will tell Total Oil Company there was a leak in the tanks from rust and the fuel consignment leaked out. ‘Total’ will have to make insurance claims on the consignment. But they will be more reluctant to transship fuel through Seychelles in the future.

SPPF will search out the rich and foolish to bank-roll fuel bills. The rich will then complain about how the Government owes them so much, as has been the case year after year.

As things get worse, they will interfere in normal business transactions of the business community, as we see in the Plantation debacle. Since when does an 8% shareholder move for the Liquidation of a company’s asset that has Second Line Mortgage on it exceeding $130 Million? Eventually, after they have sold off soft assets like islands and subdivided plots on those islands, they will start acquiring property again. They will ignore all treaties protecting investors. In 1984 Rene ignored all agreements made with other Countries and sent Embassies to hell if they did not like what they saw. SPPF will do that again. Why? Because a leopard does not change its skin. We must not forget this basic Natural law lesson SPPF has thought us.

Watch Zimbabwe and Mugabe

As Seychelles sets a course for ruin under SPPF - watch carefully the events of Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, Mugabe steals farmers’ land and gives it to his supporters. He destroyed this former African success story and today inflation has achieved Hyper Inflation status at over 100,000 %. Store shelves are empty and people suffer gravely. But Mugabe still has supporters. Here, SPPF will take us down the same road; they too will still have many supporters. Why? Because the worse an economy gets, the cheaper it becomes to buy support.

In the future, SPPF will not have to give a house for a vote. It can promise a house to a homeless. Even though there will be a Housing List, there will be no houses. But a hope is always better to have than hopelessness. Because we are small, we are less than five (5) years from a Zimbabwe-type crisis. Because we are small, if the correct measures are taken we can use these five years wisely to reduce Hyperinflation symptoms.

What Can Stop the Disaster

Many SPPF supporters do not support the Opposition because they are getting mixed messages from them. To Rene and SPPF this mix messaging is like manna from the skies. It means that Michel can survive failure and with that SPPF, like Mugabe's ZANU-PF, can survive. They do not have to do a good job to stay in Government. They only have to divide the Opposition. The mix messaging of signals is directly, in no uncertain terms, the fault of the Leader of Opposition, Reverend Ramkalawan. Recall well, he co-conspired with SPPF to take Frank Elizabeth's seat in the National Assembly. He attempted to eliminate the Democratic Party from the political landscape of Seychelles after using the DP to help him win back their seats in the National Assembly Elections. While this story is old, we must repeat it so we do not forget. History has taught us that even a People can forget who was their First President!

To stop this disaster of SPPF failing Seychelles and the People having to live with the failure, the Opposition must dialog and not end up like the Opposition in Zimbabwe and our People end up like Zimbabweans under the present leadership, basking in failure, silenced by fear and lack of trust. We are heading for disaster in the same direction. It is up to the real leaders of Seychelles to rise up to the occasion and not let the "Good Ship of Hope" sail by without us on it. I have done my duty as a citizen to send out the warning signals and alarm bells. Leaders must act or be held responsible for inaction. This is not about seeking "Power" in our actions, but it is about "Empowerment" of all our People in order that this generation does not end up being made pig food for Rene's failures that never seem to leave us because he is so good at dividing us.

As we stay divided, FAR will stay. As we unite FAR will go! What about Michel? Well, for the time that remains of his mandate, he deserves to be allowed to be his own man. It is not nice for a President to be motorcade to Maison Du Peuple every Monday morning, blocking traffic at the Clock Tower.

Some People ought to take a holiday, go pick some miniature mangos behind the glitter palace in Marimba over the hill overlooking the coast, and let our "President for all Seychellois" breathe some clean air instead of having to inhale boiled tuna everyday.

May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!
