SELECTIVE TAXATION BY PRESIDENT MICHEL AND DANNY FAURE

The reason the SPPF fails and will continue to fail the people of this country is because they cannot conceive new ideas or make decisions outside  political considerations. They cannot think out of the one party state box so to speak. Their short-sightedness is now causing the misery of an entire population. They are blaming everything and everybody else, including the populace, for the current hardship we are having to endure. The mismanagement of President Michel and the government he heads does not even get a mention in apportioning blame for the catastrophe we find ourselves in.

The Minister of Finance, Mr. Danny Faure, in an interview with SBC last Sunday gave example of the rise in domestic fuel consumption between 2001 and 2007, from 15 million US dollars to an anticipated 60 million US dollars for 2007. Faure gave figures without any substantiating argument. Poor performance from a man who wants to be president of this country one day. Mr. Danny Faure tried unsuccessfully to hide an elephant in a hay stack - the fact that fuel prices has gone up, petrol from SR7.85 to SR10.00, an increase of SR2.15, and diesel from SR5.60 to SR10.00, a staggering increase of SR4.40, is an indictment of this Government’s disappointing economic performances since 1977. During Minister Faure’s debacle on SBC last Sunday not once did he inform the viewers of the current price of crude oil on the international market and there was no mention of our five tankers. Where are the tankers and the profits which they; President Michel, Minister Faure and Guy Adam said is being generated through the transportation of fuel around the globe. Have they ever considered getting our tankers, Pioneer, Pride, Prelude, Progress and Patriot to transport fuel to Seychelles at cost price only?

Faure gave the impression that the people should find solace out of the fact that electricity charges and some other services which are fuel based are not going up. It is like being hit on the head with a hammer and thanking your attacker for not breaking your leg. This increase will have an impact on all our pockets; man, woman and child. It is aimed directly at fuel at the pumps but it will have a domino effect on everything else, touching all sectors of economic life in Seychelles. Selective taxation in achieving political expediency will backfire in more ways than one…….”Qui Vivera Vera!”
