THE SPUP DEAD AGAINST THE TOURISM INDUSTRY!

The tourism industry is by far the major pillar of our economy; this has been so since the early seventies before the 5th June, 1977, with the opening of the Pointe Larue International Airport in 1972 along with the Reef Hotel at Anse Aux Pins, the Coral Strand at Beau Vallon which boast one of the best beaches in the world, and the Mahe Beach at Port Glaud. The tourism industry was the initiative of the SDP government under the leadership of Prime Minister James Mancham.

In thirty-one years of SPPF rule tourism remains “our bread and butter”. The SPPF formerly the SPUP have failed in establishing other industries to rival the tourism industry. Seychelles today depend on tourism more so than ever before. However, back in the earlier seventies the SPUP of France Albert Rene and that of James Alix Michel was dead against the industry. They organised beach protest and bombs were planted in hotels and elsewhere in their attempt at discouraging visitors from coming on holiday to the islands.

The SPUP was a destabilising force totally against the peace, progress and prosperity the SDP stood for – the SPPF government can thank their lucky stars they have an opposition that believes firmly in democracy and the rule of law and is prepared to play it by the rule through the ballot box.

SPUP supporters march against tourism in 1973.
