Tourism fair, special tourism presentation to mark World Tourism Day

The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) is celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27 with a domestic tourism fair in Victoria and a special welcome for incoming tourists.

The tourism fair, to be held in the Seafront Restaurant at the International Conference Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is being organised to create a forum for public interaction with the tourism industry while allowing business-to-business exchanges within the industry itself.

The different sections of STB, from the marketing and website departments to the Small Establishment Enhancement Programme (SEEP), will be on display to showcase some of the latest initiatives at STB, with demonstrations of the recently re-launched Seychelles.com website, as well as a sampling of 3D Seychelles photos being used in slideshows abroad to help market the destination.

Destination management companies and airlines will also be hosting stands at the fair, giving the public a chance to drop in on some of the latest developments and services on offer.

The SEEP booth will play host to some local companies in fields such as tailoring, upholstery and hotel supplies, in a bid to match potential suppliers with hoteliers and others within the industry in need of such services.

“The end goal is to try to spur growth and interest in Seychelles tourism from within,” said an STB spokesperson. “We hope this can grow into a yearly event where the tourism industry, related sectors and the public can come together, exchange some ideas and possibly develop partnerships or secure mutually beneficial business.”

For students and those interested in a career in tourism, a presentation will be held in Room 1 of the ICCS from 9-11 a.m., and another from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the same day. The presentation will include an overview of the different niches and incentives of employment in the tourism industry, as well as a DVD viewing and take-home brochures.

STB is also organizing a special welcome on World Tourism Day for arriving visitors at the airports on Mahé and Praslin and at the La Digue jetty. School children will present tourists stepping off the morning flight from Paris with flower garlands in the midst of local music and entertainment, while on La Digue visitors will be greeted with traditional dances and complimentary kokotan (fresh coconut drink).

The UN World Tourism Organisation’s theme for World Tourism Day in 2006 is “Tourism Enriches.”
