DICTATORS RULING OVER A DEMOCRACY!

The SPPF has insisted over the years that here in Seychelles we have democracy. This argument is based on the simple fact that our constitution is one which guarantees certain rights and freedoms which allows for a multi-party system. This as far as the SPPF is concern is enough to confer upon us the title of a democratic State. But it cannot be further from reality. The dictators of the one-party system are still practising their ideology of total control SIXTEEN years after introducing a pluralistic system of politics.

The SPPF have no respect for the people of this country; they demonstrate that fact in the way they address the population through their various PPBs, on TV and on the Radio. If one had just arrived from Farquar one would be forgiven for thinking that it was the SNP/DP which had been in power for the past thirty years. President Michel and former President Rene are not mincing their words – they are both drunk on anger, frustration and their thirst for ultimate power at all costs. It is clear that the thought of ever losing power drives them both wild. They speak with a fanaticism that would have made Hitler and Sadam proud.

At their Bel Ombre rally held last Sunday, 29th April, 2007, both leaders spoke of the achievement of the past thirty years and the progress the country have made under their leadership. They have spoken previously about computers, mobile phones and the internet as if all these were invented in a dark room at “Maison du Peuple”. The one thing that bothers the SPPF leadership more so than anything else is the truth. The truth about the real state of the economy – the truth about the past and the truth about their records in government considering the BILLIONS of rupees of the people’s money they have gone through.

During his term of office Mr. Rene was very well rewarded with a fat salary and all the benefits and trimmings that go with the presidential office. Michel as president is now ripping the same reward. Both Mr. Rene and Mr. Michel want to create the impression that they are doing the Seychellois Nation a great favour in their capacity as President and former President. In fact it is them who should be grateful to the people of this country for the privileges entrust to them for so long, albeit forcefully!
