THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN PERIL!

In the last few years the economy has been slowing down to a crawl and all indications are that things are taking a turn for the worst. This week again, construction companies have been complaining of the lack of construction materials on the local market. This is not a new phenomenon but it seems that this time around it is going to cut deeper into the daily activities of construction firms. In the past when there was a shortage of building materials probably one or two items were in short supply at anyone time. This has now changed drastically everything from a nail to roofing sheets are not available on the local market.

It is said that a man in a Middle East country was sentence to death by crucifixion. The presiding judge gave the convict a last wish before being sent to meet with his maker. The man in question asked that he be sent to Seychelles to be crucify and when questioned over his choice of country. The man replied that in Seychelles his chances of surviving his conviction would be guaranteed – when asked why? He said that in Seychelles when there is wood there are no nails and when there are nails there is no wood, “So I would never be crucified”, he said. This sums up our situation presently in Seychelles.

It is getting worst, far worst than is noticeable, work has practically slowed down on most sites around the country. The trend that is fast developing in the country is the pilfering of materials from building sites. People desperate to complete their houses after years under construction are prepared to take risk even if it involves breaking the law. This Government through its failed economic policies and overall bad management of the country has turned us into a nation of criminals. Soon we will be breaking into shops to steal food – this might sound far fetched at this stage but it might become reality if we choose not to do anything about it……..
