Mak arrives for national team duty
Dutch coach Jan Mak arrives in the country this Friday to assist the national team for the next month.
The head coach of IF Elsborg of Sweden will be working with the group of players selected for the national team and who have been enrolled on the new scheme which was launched in January.
The national team will be participating in the African national championships for African based players also known as CHAN. They have been drawn to face Namibia and the first leg is to be played at the Unity Stadium next weekend whereas the return leg is at the end of the month.
Mak first came to these shores in 2008 where he worked with the squad in the qualifying matches for CAN2010. He is a highly respected coach who showed his true worth by helping to instill some much needed discipline in the squad.
Since the departure of Swedish coach Richard Holmlund late last year, the federation has found it necessary to relook at the national team set up. They recruited between 25 and 30 young and senior players who signed a contract for two years. This was to help prepare for the Island Games and the team started training twice a week. Cliff Nolin was appointed coach and now will benefit from the wide experience of coach Mak for the next month.
As for the selection, two players have recently been enlisted and they are St Michel’s Allen Larue and Don Anacoura whereas Trevor Poiret may also join the squad.
The squad will be entering a one week training camp as from next Monday at the Maison de Football in preparation for the meeting with Namibia next Saturday.
