The importation of teachers might only be part of the solution. But the problem remains with the quality of education on offer. Even the best teacher in the world will have difficulty educating the students, unless proper resources are made available by the government. How can we expect to have enough engineering graduates or even students if the quality of mathematics and science education is poor? Providing quality education to sustain the human resources needs of a developing country like ours remains one of our greatest challenges.
Scholarships on offer to students, who have graduated well from post secondary education to study abroad, alone, would never solve the problem that we face. Career guidance is an important aspect of solving the problem, as many of our children come from disadvantaged backgrounds where many are not even advised on the opportunities that the different careers on offer.
The importation of skills be it teachers, construction workers, accounting specialist and others is only and should only be a short term remedy, while developing local skills would have long-term benefits for the country. However, though employers should play an active role and should be partly responsible for developing skills, the education ministry should realise that it has a huge role to play in terms of providing quality education and good career guidance. The private schools are lending a big hand in achieving the standard that is required their contribution cannot be ignored. In fact the ministry of education should be working in close collaboration with them if they are not already doing so.
