Football: Why is Anse Reunion’s coach Vojo leaving?
Anse Reunion foreign coach Vojo Gardasevic is expected to leave the country next week.
Gardasevic took over the Anse Reunion job in 2006 after falling out with the management of their bitter rivals La Passe.
The experienced coach soon transformed Anse Reunion from one of the fringe teams to a title contender as they shocked everyone to steal the league title from favourites St Michel in dramatic fashion.
This victory further raised the status of coach Vojo who had already proven himself both with the national team and La Passe.
Vojo’s arrived in the country in 1997 as the head of the national team having worked in both Europe and in Asian countries. He showed that he was a strict disciplinarian and he helped lead the national squad to a bronze medal at the 1998 Island Games in Reunion.
The following year he guided the Under 18 selection to a silver medal on home soil at the CJSOI Games, losing the final match on penalties.
Vojo quit the national team in 2001 to join La Passe which he inspired to the league title in 2002 and again in 2004.
Locally Vojo has shown his coaching ability but since last year he has been having problems with his team. He has complained about the players’ attitudes and that they were not regular at training. This problem almost caused them to lose their first division status last season.
The heavy and humiliating defeat to St Michel was the last straw for this coach who believes in hard work and discipline.
Anse Reunion had assembled a decent squad and the departure of Vojo will be a big loss to both the La Digue team and local football which he has served for over a decade.
Vojo may leave the country soon but one should never rule out a return with another club locally as he has always expressed his love for this country.
