Seychelles DP leader meets with Kenya’s DP and Kannu leaders

Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Kenya receiving Seychelles' DP leader, Paul Chow, in Nairobi.

The leader of the Democratic Party, Mr Paul Chow was received by the Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Kenya in Nairobi last week to exchange literature and to promote ties.

The Democratic Party of Kenya was founded by the current Kenyan, President Mwai Kibaki, and currently has substantial representation in the National Assembly. Both the DP of Seychelles and Kenya are associated with the Democratic Union of Africa (DUA) the regional affiliate of the International Democrat Union.

Chow afterwards met with leader of the Kannu party, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta who is the official Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. The meeting, which lasted more than half an hour, centred on Kenya’s attempt to introduce a new constitution to replace the one which was introduced to promote a one-party state. Last year Kenyans went to the polls and rejected the proposed new constitution, which did not have the endorsement of all political parties.

Chow said that the Kenyan leaders he met were very interested in the Seychelles Constitution, especially the provision for proportional representation based on the votes political parties received in the National Assembly election. He said that the Kenyan leaders have expressed the wish to invite him to address other Kenyan political leaders  during the forthcoming constitutional consultations following the General Election sure to take place in early December.
