Joel Morgan taking his job very seriously!

Minister Morgan and the new trash bins donated by Eden Island.

No sooner has he been appointed the new man responsible to clean up the country little Joe, our new bin boy, is hard at it again. This week we saw our bin man collecting bins from Eden Island Resort. He collected all fifteen bins in one go albeit with the assistance of his Principal Secretary. Joe did not look out of place on Eden Island; after all he was chief architect in drawing up the ‘Deal’ between the Government and the company behind the project on Eden Island.

According to an article in the Seychelles Nation on Monday July 16, 2007, more rubbish than usual is being disposed of improperly, especially in the town area. The Seychelles Nation is making a case for the Government through its article ‘Eden Island pitches in’ - in passing on some of the responsibility to clean up the country on corporate organizations. The Government entered into contract some years back with STAR for the collection of litter bins around the country. According to STAR they collect bins around Victoria twice a day and a further collection in late afternoon of bins in and around the Victoria Market.

The littering problem in Victoria is threatening to get out of control; by 4 pm everyday, especially during week days, the streets of the Capital bear a resemblance of a war zone with rubbish lining the roads, gutters and pavements. This problem is far more complex than anticipated ; it is an attitude problem according to an informed source. The students are the worst culprit; after school at around 2.30 pm everyday the streets in the capital and the roads in the districts are turned into one giant litter bin by most students. They could not care less as they throw their soft drink ‘Pet’ bottles, plastic bags, chocolates and sweets wrappings everywhere regardless. It is an education issue, commented an employee of STAR. “We need to educate our people especially the students to respect their environment and into making use of the litter bins provided!” he added.

The new Minister responsible for our rubbish must take this matter up with his colleagues at the Ministry of Education; together with SBC they can start tackling this crisis which is menacing to engulf the nation in permanent junk!!
