It is now abundantly clear that Wavel John Charles Ramkalawan is happy with his lot and could not care less if SPPF remains in power for eternity. Albert Rene knows this and he said as much recently on SBC television. He said, “SPPF will be here for a long time.” The evidence for this universal truth was provided by none other than Ramakalawan himself when he stated publicly that he is happy that the people of Seychelles have not elected him President of this country. Frank Elizabeth, in his first PPB on SBC television, showed Ramkalawan in the National Assembly shamelessly making the most embarrassing statement ever uttered by a leader in the course of history for the benefit of those who missed it or refused to believe it. The gravity of that statement and its accompanying implication was not lost on the most mundane of observer. One began to wonder if Ramkalawan is indeed as dumb as he looks.
Someone once said that action speaks louder than words, and if this is true, then Ramkalawan, by his action has clearly demonstrated that he is happy with SPPF. This has come about with the realization that the people of Seychelles will never ever elect Ramkalawan as their President. They have told him as much. Not once not twice but four times! Is it not time for Ramkalawan to listen. He once said after yet another calamitous election defeats that, “The people have spoken and I will listen.” Why is he not listening now? He has single handedly destroyed the unity in the opposition by breaking the alliance with DP. He has undemocratically kicked Elizabeth out of the National Assembly. He has ordered Arpent Vert not to print Le Nouveau Seychelles Weekly. He has voted for massive salary increases for himself and the SPPF. He has rubbed shoulders with President Michel at State House and shared a cup of hot tea. He has embarrassingly whispered sweet nonsense in the President’s ear at Saint Louis. He has brought unprecedented shame on his supporters, his party and the opposition as whole. How much more embarrassment can Ramkalawan pile on the 46% of the electorate who voted for him?
Why doesn’t he do the decent thing and resign as Leader of SNP and allow someone else to lead the party to victory. Someone, who can unify the opposition and not divide it, someone who will put the national interest first and not his own pocket first, someone who can command dignity and respect and not contempt and ridicule. Instead of encouraging Jean Francois Ferrari to resign from the National Assembly, why don’t you resign as leader of your party, Ramkalawan? Why did you not show solidarity with Ferrari and resign “en bloc” from the National Assembly just like you vote “en bloc” in the National Assembly? Ramkalawan has lost the respect and admiration of the people of Seychelles by his actions. Is it not time for him to do the right thing and go in peace and dignity?
