As is customary every year, once again to commemorate our Independence Day anniversary on 29th June, young athletes from schools across Mahe, Praslin and La Digue came out in numbers to show their skills and talents in over 100 track and field events.
Compared to the previous year, when the event was held at ‘Stad Popiler’, it must have been pleasing for all school managers to see the championship back at Stad Linite, a cause championed by this publication in previous editions earlier in the year, which means that school children were seated in the shade as opposed to the scorching sun which was the case last year.
By the end of the long day of competition certain schools managed to hang on to their title but there were many surprises amongst the winners. What is now abundantly clear is that every year, school athletes from the four corners of the country come together on Independence Day on Mahe determine to do their best to win medals and do well in the competition for their schools. This year again there was fierce competition in the Secondary schools category between Anse Royale and Praslin Secondary. The battle in the primary schools category was between La Digue, Anse Aux Pins and Plaisance.
At the end of the day, La Digue won the President’s Cup for Primary school competitors, Anse Royale for Secondary and Seychelles Agricultural and Horticultural Training Centre (SAHTC) for post-secondary. Plaisance came out as the best Primary school overall, Praslin was best secondary school and Maritime Training Centre topped the post-secondary category.
