FOR THE GOOD OF ALL!

From this week forward and for the foreseeable future, this column will team up with ‘Deginyen’ – also known as scruffy Kato - together we will offer some good advice to our President in the spirit of the national theme for 2007, “Ansamn Pou Lanmour Sesel”. I hope it will be viewed in the spirit that it is intended. For the good of all in Seychelles!

No. 1 – EMPLOYMENT LAWS: - Change the archaic, SOCIALIST Employment Laws.  Allow people to be hired and fired freely, if they are not performing to the standard that is required under the terms of their employment - without having to go through a ridiculous process at the Employment Office in the presence of certain “INCOMPETENT” officer among the “Competent” ones.

No. 2 – FASTER INTERNET LINK: – Need to link to the undersea fiber cable for faster speeds and to stop relying on slow, expensive satellite links.

No. 3 – FOREIGN EXCHANGE LAWS: – For the love of all Seychellois, “Pou Lanmour Sesel”, free your people from this misery once and for all and announce that “your” people can walk freely with their few Dollars or Euros in their pockets.  You will definitely get some more votes here.  In fact, allow them to open a “forex” account with the banks so that they can bank their notes instead of keeping them under the mattresses. In so doing, your citizens are committing a criminal offence. All because of an unfair law bent on total control over your fellow citizens.

(More next week Mr. President)

Foreign Affairs  catches  fire

Sad to see the Foreign Affairs building on fire!  Amazing though that both parts of the roof caught fire at the same time!  More amazing to read Mr. Morel’s (PS Foreign Affairs) state that the firefighting operation was hampered by “…the fact that the nearest fire hydrant was not functioning”!  Imagine a tall building with a bakery inside (such as the new Supasave Building) catching on fire! The fire fighters had to struggle with the fire hydrant to get to it and to get it to work. This was due to a lack of servicing. The lesson we should all take away from this tragic event is that it pays to service the various fire hydrants around the country. And never to house the outdoor unit of an air condition system in the building especially in the wooden section of the structure.

Practicing the Practice

Seychelles is one of the few countries in the world, if not the only country, where people practice beforehand, the arrival of a Head of State.  The police is practicing how to stop the traffic, flowers and palm trees have been planted, bright red banners have been displayed everywhere.  Is President Michel trying to out do President Jintao after his own visit to China?

It seems that all our meagre resources have not been spared in a desperate attempt to impress President Jintao.  It is only a matter of time before the Minister of Finance announce a budget deficit since the cost of the visit was not budgeted in the 2006-2007 budget.  Our lives have come to a complete standstill as we wait breathlessly and in anticipation for the arrival of our “miracle man”.
