Chilean Dictator too weak to have second surgery

If there is one thing that is certain in life it is death. Dictators come and go but sometimes they behave as if they will live forever. Who would have thought that General Augusto Pinochet, the strong man of Chile, would today be haunted by his crimes? The Chilean dictator had heart surgery on Sunday and doctors say a 2nd operation will be “too risky” for the old man. Doctors treating Chile’s former military ruler, have rejected claims he has exaggerated his illness to avoid prosecution on human rights and tax fraud charges.

One of the doctors has said General Pinochet is making a good recovery from his recent heart attack, because it was diagnosed and treated in time. The General’s son, Marco Antonio Pinochet, has also rejected the claims. “Due to his health condition he has a permanent nurse and an ambulance at his disposal,” he said. “He is able to be in the hospital in seven minutes. While he was going doctors were already prepared to see him and luckily there was a cardio specialist on duty. So the conditions were there for him to live. If he’d got there five minutes later he would have died”.
