CHOW: SEYCHELLES IS ON THE VERGE OF INEVITABLE CHANGE

The leader of the Democratic Party, Paul Chow, has said that the Seychelles is on the verge of major change. There is no doubt, he said, that in 2006 the Seychelles will experience change.

Chow made the remark during his keynote speech to the gathering of over 100 party members gathered at the Mahe Beach Hotel on 28th June, for the party's annual party conference. The theme of the conference  SESEL APRE SANZMAN 2006 (Seychelles after the change in 2006)  was chosen Chow said, because the party is convinced that 2006 will be a watershed in our history as inevitable change in the political, social and economic spheres will take place from this year onwards. read more

ALBERT RENE (AND SPPF) CONTINUES TO DISTORT HISTORY

The former president France Albert Rene, has used an organ of the government which his party has been in control of for the last 29 years to distort the history of our country to justify his political ambition for political power at all costs.

This week the Seychelles Nation, a daily newspaper financed by public funds but in absolute editorial control of the President of Seychelles - which he uses for party political propaganda purposes – published an “interview” with the former president who is still the de jure leader of the SPPF. read more

INDEPENDENCE DAY

What does it mean today?

The evening of 28th June 1976 was an occasion for celebration for many and sadness for some. As a new nation, we were taking a giant leap forward, unsure of the future.

It was celebratory in that the pomp and ceremony that unfolded at the newly built stadium in Victoria, resplendent in bright lights for the first time, attracted a capacity crowd of 4000 people. They freely came from all over the country. read more

THE ECONOMIC PROSPECTS OF SEYCHELLES

At the time of our independence, the Seychelles was, according to a World Bank study, a middle income country. This study was, for obvious reasons, never made public by Albert Rene and the government he led after the violent coup d’etat which he engineered on 5th June, 1977 to establish a Marxist dictatorship. read more

Ramkalawan: Mancham deserves his place in the history of our country as the Father of the Seychellois Nation

The leader of the Seychelles National Party (SNP) – Wavel Ramkalawan – has declared that if he is elected the next President of Seychelles he will honour the former and first president of the country – James Mancham, as the father of the Seychellois nation. Ramkalwan made the declaration while addressing the largest crowd assembled for a political rally this year in Freedom Square. read more

A large crowd descended on Victoria last Saturday to take part in activities organized by the Seychelles National Party (SNP) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence. The participants came from all over Mahé, however they could, after the organizers had been refused the possibility of providing free buses on the grounds that the bus drivers were too tired. Not even a musical show hastily organized by the SPPF to keep the revelers away from Victoria could prevent the influx to the rally. In the end, we saw the largest crowd assembled on the appropriately named Freedom Square for a political event this year, signalling a definite step shift in the political fortunes of the Opposition Alliance. read more

This 29th June 1976 is a unique day in our history and should be treated as such. It was on that day thirty years ago that you and I became citizens of the Republic of Seychelles. Before that we were mere citizens of the British Empire living in the Colony of Seychelles and we travelled around the world on a colonial passport.

I remember that day at ‘Stad Popiler’ as if it was yesterday. I was only sixteen then and I lived at Corgate Estate. My two brothers, Donald and Robert, joined me and we walked the short distance from Mont Fleuri to the stadium in Victoria, down to watch this momentous event. read more

THE PEOPLE ARE MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER BEFORE

The end to the SPPF rule is now upon us. It is only a matter of time, thirty days in fact, before the electorate puts an end to dictatorial rule, political victimisation and favouritism in Seychelles. All things considered the signs are not looking good for J and j. The Grand master has been a hindrance rather than an asset in maintaining their hold on power. Single-handedly he has succeeded in upsetting an entire population with threats of widespread sacking and victimisation after the election; the people are more determined than ever before not to allow these threats to become a reality.  read more

INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY FEATURE

REMOVE MY SHACKLES!

In 1976 Seychelles attained its independence from the British Government. “Independence” is defined as being “free from the influence, guidance, or control of another or others”. From that point on, the People of Seychelles were able to determine the form of its Government. In a sense Seychelles became self-governing that is, not governed by a foreign power. read more
