Janet Georges raring to go
Weightlifter Janet Georges is raring to go in her favoured sport after almost a two year break.
Georges, who has won the sports lady of the year award a record four times, took a break from the sports in the middle of 2012 after she had claimed two gold medals in African competitions and a silver medal. Georges had registered an excellent result back then but sadly it was not enough to qualify her for the Summer Olympics in London in July that same year which was a major disappointment for her.
“When I suffered a back problem in June 2012, I was advised that it would be better if I took a break from the sport so I adhered to the advice I was given,” the Police Officer told TODAY Sports.
In August 2013, Georges who got married in 2009, gave birth to a baby boy, Youcas, and now eight months later, she thinks the time is right to make her much awaited return.
“I started light training in February this year, with only technique work outs but I hope to start doing more strenuous exercise and see if I will be ready to compete in the first local competition in May,” she noted Georges.
She is eager to be in shape as she is desperate to start competing so that she can make the team for the Commonwealth Games where she wants to leave “If I don’t make it for the Commonwealth Games, I will try to be ready for the African championship later this year,” a philosophical Georges added. However, there is no doubt that the high performing athlete has kept her promise of making a comeback and is also pleased to see her fellow weightlifter Clementina Agricole lift the top sport award for 2013 during her absence.
“It had always been Clementina’s dream to win this top award especially after getting so close in 2009 where she finished as runner-up. I am therefore happy to see her achieve her dream and shows the potential of this sport in this country,” Georges said.
As for herself, she is only too happy to be back in training after such a lengthy absence.
“It is my love for the sport that has influenced me to return and I hope I can rediscover my top form,” Georges told TODAY Sports in conclusion.
