LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Mont Fleuri Sports Complex

SIR, please check for us which is more important if the facility whereby the Mont Fleuri Youths can use the field and the sitting are of the big silver sign that one can only read but cannot enjoy the facility itself.

Last time they had the TB day there and people had to stand by the sideline and could not use the sitting areas as the “Fatak” there is much taller than them.

Is that district being neglected  because the opposition has taken it from the SPPF?

And also Mr. Volcere please check whether the Land Transport Ltd. Cannot see that the entrance of the Mont Fleuri Hospital is causing a lot of problem for the road user and that it can cause fatal accident anytime now that the damage on the road  there is getting worst.

Last time we heard the Police Commissioner saying that they need new laws to maintain a better level of traffic on our road, do they need a new law to tell G.S. Pillay to go back to its store at Providence Industrial Estate to deliver it Seybrew drinks where it used to be delivered as it is causing a lot of congestions and I have been a victim of accident there twice last year and I am very sure that if you liase with the Mont Fleuri Police Station you will see how many accident have occurred there since they have been delivering drinks there.

Bon marse i kout ser

Editer, la vi i pou tou dimoun.

At times some people say Oh my life is expensive but it is expensive for everyone else.

My friend had a salary progression of 100/- for having been good in her job.  She bought a pair of shoes for her daughter at 125/-.  Poor Woman, one should have advised her.

The next day, the daughter went out of the house even without having tested the shoes, they broke off.  Where is quality for someone earning a basic salary? There are so many things in life that she would like to talk about.

Bye-bye

Do not buy cheap cause cheap cost expensive.

Chinese Fishing Vessel

SIR, last month you wrote an article about the Chinese Fishing Vessel and thanks to this article our precious marine resources were preserved from savage foreign exploitation.

There are, however, a few questions which the article did not ask.

1. What will happen to this boat now?

2. Will it become a local vessel?

3. If so, what type of license will it get?

4. Will the Chinese crew be allowed to work as fisherman?

Our resources are fragile and we should reserve them for real Seychellois.  Shame on those real Seychellois.  Shame on those who do not defend our interests.

A Seychellois

La Legion d’Honneur de France

Sir, the French Ambassador to Seychelles, Mr. Michel Tretout, is keeping very quiet over the storm which is brewing regarding the decision to bestow France’s highest honour on Minister Sylvette Pool. The Ambassador must not hide away in a corner; he should come forward to defend the decision taken by France if he feels it is justified. The French must surely have good reasons for giving the award to Minister Pool. The French Ambassador should not be afraid to make his or his country’s views known to the general public. We are all waiting to hear from him. “Monsieur ou être vous on veux entendre de vous. ”

Governor Watching Ships Go By

SIR,the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Francis Chang Leng, went on SBC this week to tell us the delays in materials and food stuff arriving in Seychelles is due to shipping schedules. Since they do not come here often, we have shortages. He also advised the Public, that because there was “a building boom in the world”, there may be some shortages of construction materials in Seychelles.

The Governor, of course, admitted that a Pipeline for backlog demand on foreign exchange still exists. He said that he was using “Reserves” to pay out the Pipeline arrears, little by little. Incredible! Using Reserves for paying out bills owed on things used up already by the public. The Governor, of course, has made no correlation (the link) between the Pipeline still thriving and the ships coming in without goods for us. However, the exporters to Seychelles have. Many have stopped sending us any consignments on credit and now ship on cash only basis. Hence, the reason why ships are empty and come less often.

The Governor also did not tell us that most of the Reserves were from our famous Bond of 200 million Dollars which we will have to repay soon somewhere down the line, and a bit of contributions from China to keep us going.

In the same breath he said “we paid all our loans”. Did he mean the Central Bank paid all its loans or the Government of Seychelles? I found that to be a statement bordering on the “virtual cartoon world”.

He also advised us categorically that the Rupee is not devaluing. I have no comment on that. I am sure the general public is capable of making up its own mind on that one.

Perhaps there may be an opening in the near future for a head of The National Theatre, we could call the post “Governor of The National Theatre”. Mr. Chang Leng may want to apply for the post, since he seems well qualified for the post. His comical approach in running the Central Bank would definitely go down as good valuable experience.

I remember one of my teachers told my class one day before filling applications for University; some of us did not have anything to place on the Applications as worthwhile accomplishments. He said, “Hey guys just fake it...until you make it”. Seems Mr. Governor has already taken this advice a long time ago.

 Fake Me Not Mr. Governor!

Let us not be greedy.   Cela va  pour L’Ambassadeur de France ainsi que nos ascendances.

La langue Française est une langue nationale et il faut la parler.

L’ORDRE NATIONAL DE LA LEGION D’ (ES) HONNEUR

Sir, I agree that the hardworking and fully committed Minister Sylvette Pool deserves a decoration of some kind e.g. The Great Medal of Mao’s Revolution or the Diamond Star of Lenin or the Great Elephant Medal of President Mugabe of Zimbabwe but certainly not La Legion d’Honneur de France!

Hard Times

Sir, On my recent return to Seychelles from the UK I was surprised to find that almost a complete chapter of my book “Hard Times in Paradise” was reproduced in the “Seychelles Weekly” of 6 April 2007. While I recognise your good intentions in bringing the circumstances in which slavery was abolished in Seychelles to the notice of a wider readership, and perhaps I should be flattered that you selected one of my books for that purpose, it was done without my permission and was clearly a breach of copyright.

I must therefore ask that you print this letter in the next edition of the “Seychelles Weekly” in order to make clear that I did not seek to promote my book through the courtesy of your newspaper.

Yours sincerely,

William McAteer
