IS GERARD LAFORTUNE GETTING COLD FEET?
Many welcomed the effort of the department of Road Transport recently to alleviate the traffic congestion in Victoria. The decision is said to have been a personal initiative of Mr. Gerard Lafortune, the dynamic Principal Secretary in that Ministry, who single handedly introduced the two lane road at Olivier Maradan Street and simultaneously cancelled the parking zone immediately before and in front of the Cathedral. This brought much needed relief to the infamous traffic jam plagued roads of Victoria. However, the department has inexplicably failed to continue with the exercise and make the road in front of SMB and Premier Building also a two lane street with parking spaces abolished to allow for the free flow of traffic. We also support the view that the English River road should be used to take traffic out of Victoria instead of bringing more traffic into Victoria. President James Michel in his address at the Vision 2017 stated that over 100 vehicles are introduced on the roads in Seychelles every month. Whilst there has been a rapid rise in the number of vehicles on our roads recently, the Land Transport has done very little to accommodate the increase. The Glacis road has also become a nightmare with nothing being done to resurface that particular stretch of road and fill up the exacerbated pot holes. Does this mean that the government is already running out of money or is Mr. Lafortune getting cold feet?
