JACOBS LEADERSHIP PROJECT LAUNCHED IN SEYCHELLES

The Youth Leadership Development Project for Africa Scout Region, financially supported by the Jacobs Foundation was launched in Seychelles Scout Association during the last week of February in Victoria, Seychelles.

The Project will run for the next 18 months and the Association has planned for a 50% growth through programmes and activities within that time.  During the launch, the Chief Commissioner, Mr. Bernard Elizabeth said it was a great honour for Seychelles, being one of the youngest National Scout Associations in Africa to have been selected to participate in the pilot phase of the Project. He noted that the Project will boost the capacity of the Association to implement its’ three year development plan.

Through this project, the Association has planned to revise its youth programme, to develop an Adult Resources Policy that will guide in the recruitment and retention of volunteers, and to run a series of youth leadership courses for the Scouts. Management, Leadership and team building courses have also been scheduled for the Scout Leaders, to equip them with skills necessary for the delivery of the Youth Programme. The Association has also planned to integrate more closely, the young people in the process of youth programme development.

Present at the launching ceremony were top leaders of the Seychelles Scout Association. Lydiah Kiburu and Lucia Chebet, from the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office facilitated the three-day Planning Workshop.

The Project will shortly be rolled out in Angola Scout Association.  The first six countries in which the Project is currently running include; South Africa, Mauritius, Burundi, Ethiopia, Niger and the Gambia.

The Project aims at improving leadership skills for the young people in Scouting, so that they can be prepared to bring positive change to their Associations, among their peers, their families and their communities.  It is implemented by National Scout Associations in Africa, with coordination from the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office and financial support from the Jacobs Foundation in Switzerland.
