Boxing: Allisop wins in Spain

His Olympics preparations are on the right track.

Seychelles top boxer Andrique Allisop (in red) won gold in the BOXAM tournament in Spain as his Olympic preparations intensify.

Seychelles’ Olympic bound pugilist Andrick Allisop won the gold medal at the BOXAM tournament which is a sign that his Olympic preparations are going well. In the 60kg final in the tournament in Spain, Allisop beat Billy Edwards from Spain by 3-0.

To reach the final Allisop had eliminated Spanish boxer, Pedro Salas in the semifinal in the tournament taking place in Tenerife. This was Alissop’s second tournament in a month as his preparations for this year’s Rio Olympic intensify. Before going to Spain he took part in a competition in Serbia where he lost in the quarterfinals. Allisop was accompanied by Coaches Jerry Legras and Rival Payet at the BOXAM tournament.

Allisop is so far the only local pugilist to have qualified for the Olympic Games. And the boxing federation in collaboration with the National Sports Council has drawn up a comprehensive training program for him. The boxer has said that he is going for a medal at the Rio Olympics and if indeed he manages to do that he will make history in Seychelles sports by being the first Seychellois to win a medal at this world’s premier sports event.

The Rio Games will be Allisop’s second Olympics after taking part in the London Games four years ago.
